Christian Holtappel

Hi, I’m Christian - a writer, director and editor based in Northern England.

I studied at the Northern Film School, where my graduation short, Home, earned the class of 2017’s Best Film award. Since then I’ve gone on to write and direct two more shorts, Dark Rooms and The Girl with Flaxen Hair, and seen award success on the festival circuit too. In 2022 I was selected to take part in Screen Yorkshire’s creative development scheme, FLEX, where I worked alongside a writer and a producer to co-create, develop and pitch a long-form TV drama project to a range of broadcast and streaming commissioners.

I’m inspired by little details that make a big impact. Textures, tics, turns of phrase. Stuff we can instantly recognise and relate to. As a neurodivergent filmmaker, I find moments of sensory experience or wordless feeling really powerful, and hopefully my work reflects that.

Outside of narrative, I work with Tungsten Media in Leeds, West Yorkshire to develop, direct and edit commercial content for brands across the UK (and beyond). We’ve delivered everything from web and social ads to TVC and cinema campaigns. There’s something really fun about the economy of visual storytelling in commercial work - it always makes for a rewarding creative exercise.

I’m keen to meet new collaborators. If that could be you, feel free to drop me a line.
